Where to Plant Figs in Zone 6

Site selection does more work than most gardeners expect. Plant a fig in the wrong spot and you add a full sub-zone of cold exposure. Plant it well and you gain one. Every university extension service from Penn State to Rutgers to UMD recommends the same: a south- or southwest-facing masonry wall.

Brick and stone walls absorb heat during the day and radiate it at night, creating a microclimate that can run 5–10°F warmer than open-air positions. Beyond the wall placement:

How to Protect Figs Through a Zone 6 Winter

This is where Zone 6 fig growing actually happens. The protection step is non-negotiable — but it’s less complicated than it sounds.

For in-ground trees:

After the first hard frost and leaf drop — typically late October to early November across most of Zone 6 — apply 6–8 inches of straw or shredded leaves around the base of the tree, extending at least 3 feet from the trunk. This insulates the root zone, which is the highest priority. Even if you do nothing else, protecting the roots gives the tree a strong chance at spring recovery.

For container figs:

In Zone 6a, or when growing a Zone 7 variety like Brown Turkey, containers are the more reliable route. Use an 18-inch minimum diameter container with drainage holes. Once the tree is fully dormant after frost, move it to an unheated garage, basement, or greenhouse — cold enough to maintain dormancy, but not freezing. UNH Extension recommends watering every one to two weeks, just enough to prevent the roots from completely drying out. Bring it back outdoors gradually after your last frost date, increasing sun exposure over a week before leaving it out permanently.
