What this means in practice: don’t panic when a fall-sown fava bed looks frost-hit in January — in my own zone 7 bed the outer leaves blacken most winters and the plants push right through it. Blackened leaf tips on the outside of the plant are normal winter wear, not crop failure — the pods forming lower on the stem, protected by the plant’s own bulk, are usually fine.

Pull back the stem seam or split the pod with a knife to free the beans — that’s shell number one.
