What Makes Echeveria Imbricata Worth Growing?

Most Echeverias demand a pampered microclimate, but Echeveria imbricata tolerates brief frost, thrives in cramped pots, and spends every summer producing a ring of baby rosettes around its base. That last quality is the source of its common name: Blue Hens and Chicks. The “hen” (the mother rosette) raises her “chicks” (offsets), and unlike the Sempervivum hen—who dies after flowering—this one keeps going indefinitely, churning out new plants season after season.

Propagating from Offsets: How the Chicks Work

The defining characteristic of Echeveria imbricata is its offset production. From late spring onward, lateral stems emerge from the base of the mother rosette and push outward, each one terminating in a new small rosette. These are the chicks.
