Dent Corn — America’s Workhorse

Growing Multiple Types: Isolation Distances Explained
Corn is wind-pollinated. Pollen from tassels drifts to silks up to 300 feet away, and any cross-pollination changes the kernel composition in that season’s ears on the pollinated plant — not next year’s seeds. This means the isolation distance you need depends on which types you’re protecting and which gene is in play.
- Sweet corn (su or se) from dent or field corn: 250 feet minimum. Cross-pollinated sweet corn kernels become starchy and inedible on the contaminated ears.
- Sweet corn from popcorn: 250 feet minimum. Same starchy result.
- Supersweet (sh2) from any other corn: 400 yards is the standard recommendation from seed companies, or stage plantings so tassels are at least 4 weeks apart.
- Popcorn from field corn: 300 feet. Cross-pollination degrades popping quality and expansion ratio.
If your garden can’t accommodate 250-foot separation — and most can’t — stagger planting dates by 14 days instead. Plant the first variety, wait two weeks, then plant the second. By the time the later variety tassels, the earlier one will have finished pollinating. This timing method is the standard home-garden workaround and works reliably when executed carefully.

Can you eat dent corn fresh off the cob?

What makes homegrown popcorn fail to pop?
