Rudbeckia: The Black-Eyed Susans

Rudbeckia is the largest of the three genera, with around 25 species native across North America [1]. Ratibida: Prairie Coneflowers for Tough Sites

Ratibida is the least-known of the three coneflower genera, which is a shame — it belongs in more gardens, particularly where thin, dry, or nutrient-poor soils rule out other flowering perennials. For most home gardens (zones 5–8): Start with E. purpurea. It’s the most adaptable, longest-lived, and has the widest cultivar range. Choose a species-type cultivar like ‘Magnus’ or ‘White Swan’ if supporting pollinators matters; choose a hybrid only if color variety is the priority.
