How to Propagate Croton from Stem Cuttings and Air Layering

Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) is one of the most visually striking houseplants you can grow — those flame-coloured leaves in reds, oranges, yellows, and greens are cultivar-specific. Grow a croton from seed and the seedling’s colours will bear little resemblance to the parent plant. How to Propagate Croton from Stem Cuttings

When to Take Cuttings

Aim for late spring through midsummer, when croton is producing fresh, actively growing shoots. This softwood phase gives you material that is flexible, not yet woody, and loaded with the natural growth signals that initiate roots. In my experience, midsummer cuttings from the current season’s growth root noticeably faster than those taken from hardened autumn wood, which has become less responsive to hormone treatment.

Preparing the Cutting

Signs of Successful Rooting

New leaf growth at the tip is the most reliable sign that roots have formed — the cutting is drawing water and nutrients again, which only happens once the root system is active. Leaf drop from the lower part of the cutting during the rooting period is normal for croton and not a failure signal; watch the growing tip instead. Rooting typically takes four to eight weeks for softwood cuttings. Once new growth appears, remove the humidity covering and begin transitioning to normal care.

How to Propagate Croton by Air Layering

Spring is the preferred season. Wisconsin Horticulture Extension recommends air layering croton in spring, using the previous season’s mature shoots. You can also layer in midsummer on current-season wood once it has firmed up slightly. Avoid starting air layers in autumn or winter when root initiation slows considerably.

The Ring-Cut Method: Why Croton Needs Girdling, Not a Notch

This is the distinction most croton propagation guides miss entirely — and it accounts for a large proportion of failed air layers.

Iowa State Extension specifies that dicots — broad-leaved plants including croton, weeping fig, and rubber tree — require the ring-cut (girdling) method for air layering, not the upward-notch cut recommended for monocots like dieffenbachia and dracaena. The reason is anatomical. Croton has a continuous ring of cambial tissue running just beneath the bark. If any of that cambium remains intact after wounding, the plant regenerates the connection across the wound and no roots form. A simple notch cuts into part of the stem but leaves the surrounding cambial ring largely intact — which is why notch-layered croton often produces a callus bridge across the wound instead of a root ball.

To make the ring cut: select a straight, healthy section of stem, pencil-diameter or thicker, about 12–15 inches from the growing tip. Make two parallel cuts all the way around the stem, spaced approximately 1–1.5 inches apart, cutting cleanly through the bark. Connect the two rings with a single lengthwise cut and peel the bark ring free. Then use the back of your knife blade to scrape away the slippery green cambial layer from the exposed wood. Clemson HGIC emphasises this step specifically: residual cambium allows callus to bridge the gap and prevents roots from initiating. The exposed surface should appear tan to light wood colour — not green or slippery.

Check the moss weekly by pressing the plastic from outside. If the moss feels dry or the ball has contracted, carefully loosen the lower end of the plastic, rewet the moss with a syringe or small dropper, and reseal. If the moss dries out completely before roots appear, the layer will fail. Clemson HGIC states this directly: consistent moisture is non-negotiable throughout the process. Monitoring and Knowing When to Sever

Post-Severance Hardening
