Hydrangea Watering by Season: 1 Inch a Week in Summer, Almost None in Winter
Water hydrangeas like it’s always summer and you’ll rot the roots by January. Here’s the season-by-season watering schedule extension experts recommend.
A hydrangea’s water needs are not the same in June as they are in December — treating them as if they were is the fastest way to either starve the plant during bloom set or drown its roots once it goes dormant. The short version: newly planted hydrangeas want water once or twice a week, established plants want roughly 1 inch a week through spring and summer, and once the plant goes dormant in winter that number drops close to zero, with one seasonal exception. The pattern that matters most: frequency and amount both fall as the season turns, but neither hits true zero until the ground actually freezes.

Why the Right Frequency Changes Every Season
How often you water matters less than the two variables moving underneath it: how fast the plant is losing water through its leaves, and how much of its root system is actually active. Both run on their own seasonal clock, and watering advice that ignores them is exactly why “water once a week, year-round” works fine in June and rots the roots by January.

Hydrangeas have unusually large leaf surfaces for a shrub, which means they lose water through transpiration faster than most garden plants — that’s the summer side of the equation. In winter, this whole system throttles down. Root metabolic activity slows drastically once the plant is dormant, water uptake nearly stops, and that’s the direct cause of the near-zero winter number in the table above — not just “the plant doesn’t need it because it’s cold.”
Spring: New Plants Need Water Every 2–3 Days, Established Ones Don’t
A hydrangea planted this spring and one that’s been in the ground three years have almost nothing in common watering-wise, because the new one’s entire root system is still confined to its original root ball — the wider-soil-moisture rule that applies to established shrubs doesn’t apply yet. Summer: Peak Demand, Especially in Containers
Summer is when the frequency numbers in the table stop being a suggestion. Clemson Cooperative Extension recommends watering deeply once a week as the baseline, moving to twice a week during hot spells on sandy, fast-draining soil [2] — this is also when buds and blooms are actively forming, so as a general guideline, staying consistent with watering through this window matters for bloom quality, not just leaf health. Fall: Taper the Frequency, But Don’t Stop Cold
Growth slows in fall, but the roots underground are still working, and this is the season most watering advice gets vague or wrong. UConn’s Home & Garden Education Center names hydrangeas specifically — alongside boxwood and azalea — as shallow-rooted shrubs that need supplemental water through dry fall periods, because moist soil insulates roots against frost penetration far better than dry soil does [9]. The practical rule: water only on days when the temperature is above 40°F, preferably late morning or early afternoon, checking soil moisture at 4–6 inches deep first with a trowel or dowel. Use a soaker hose for a slow, deep soak rather than a quick surface sprinkle, and stop entirely once the ground actually freezes — frozen soil can’t take up water regardless of how dry it is underneath [9]. Winter: Almost No Water, With One Exception
Once a hydrangea is fully dormant, it needs very little added water in most climates — as a general guideline among extension sources, this is the season where overwatering is the bigger risk to the plant, not the cold itself, since waterlogged, poorly-draining soil around dormant roots invites rot with no active growth to recover from it. The one exception is an extended dry, mild spell — several weeks with no rain or snowmelt and temperatures staying above 40°F. How to Actually Measure “1 Inch” of Water
“An inch of water” only means something if you can measure it, and most gardeners guess. Set three to five straight-sided containers — a tuna can works — around the base of the plant, run your hose or soaker for a set time, then check the depth with a ruler; that tells you exactly how long your setup takes to deliver an inch, so you can stop guessing every time after [5].
