How to Tell Which Problem You’re Actually Dealing With
Three hedge problems, three completely different fixes. Treating box blight with renovation pruning wastes months. Applying fungicide to an overgrown hedge fixes nothing. Before reaching for the shears or sprayer, spend five minutes with these distinguishing signs.
Bare patches appear in localized areas of an otherwise functioning hedge. The damage is patchy or one-sided — some sections die while adjacent growth stays healthy. The cause could be insects, root disease, environmental stress, or a pruning error, and each one needs a different response.
Box blight is exclusive to boxwood (Buxus) and spreads progressively. You’ll see circular spots forming on leaves before they drop entirely — not browning from the tips inward, but discrete spots that coalesce until the leaf falls. Black streaks on young stems are diagnostic. It typically starts in the inner or lower sections of a dense hedge where airflow is restricted.
Overgrowth is a structural problem, not a health problem. The plant is green and vigorous — it’s just larger than you want. The confusion arises when an overgrown hedge develops bare patches at the base because lower branches are light-starved. In that case, overgrowth is causing the bare patches, not disease. Different problem, different fix.

Bare Patches — Diagnosing the Cause Before You Treat
The frustration with bare patches is that the same visual symptom — brown, dead growth — has half a dozen different causes. Here’s how to identify which one you have.

The key distinction is between conifers and broadleaf species. Once a conifer like Leyland cypress or Western red cedar is cut past the green zone into old wood, it cannot regenerate. Yew is the notable exception — it regrows readily from old wood, which is why it handles hard renovation so well. Broadleaf species including beech, hawthorn, holly, and hornbeam will regenerate from old stems as long as the roots are healthy.
Cypress aphid deserves particular attention because it is responsible for roughly half of all brown patch cases in conifer hedges investigated by the RHS. Damage appears in late spring and summer, but by the time browning is visible, the aphids may have already moved on — look for cast skins and sooty mold rather than the insects themselves.
Box Blight — The Disease That Outlives the Plant
The detail that makes box blight so persistent is this: spores from the two responsible fungi — Calonectria pseudonaviculata and Calonectria henricotiae — survive on fallen leaf litter for up to six years. Remove every infected plant and the soil around your boxwood still holds a viable spore bank for six more growing seasons. Most gardeners who replant boxwood into that same ground trigger a fresh outbreak within months.
How to Identify It
Start with the leaves. Box blight produces circular brown spots that grow and merge — the damage moves inward from a spot, not from the tip. As infection progresses, leaves detach entirely, leaving bare stems. Those stems will show black streaks or cankers running down green growth — this combination of defoliation plus black stem lesions is diagnostic for box blight specifically.
In humid conditions, check the undersides of affected leaves for white powdery spore masses. This is how you distinguish it from Volutella blight, which produces similar defoliation but leaves pink-orange spore masses, not white. Box tree caterpillar damage, by contrast, leaves webbing and caterpillar frass inside the plant before defoliation occurs.
According to the University of Connecticut Extension, the pathogen thrives between 64–80°F with high relative humidity — conditions common in early summer across much of the eastern and central US. Dense, un-thinned boxwood creates its own humid microclimate that accelerates spread. This explains why box blight appears to skip random sections of a hedge: it follows airflow patterns, not the hedge’s geometry.

Treatment
Cut only in dry conditions. Wet pruning spreads spores via water on blades, hands, and clothing. Remove infected sections cutting 6 inches beyond any visible browning — the disease consistently advances further than the visible damage suggests. Remove and bag every fallen leaf from around affected plants. Do not compost infected material; the spores survive composting.
Disinfect tools in a 10% bleach solution or 70% ethanol between every plant, not just between sessions. If you have both healthy and infected boxwood, always cut the healthy plants first.
For widespread infection covering more than a third of the hedge, the RHS recommends cutting the entire plant back hard — to approximately 6 inches above ground. This sounds drastic, but box responds well to severe pruning and will regenerate. More importantly, it creates a more open structure that resists re-infection by improving airflow through the plant.
When to Move On
If blight returns consistently despite best management for two successive growing seasons, the soil likely holds a significant long-lived spore bank. At that point, removal and replanting with alternatives is more practical than continued treatment. The RHS does not recommend relying on fungicides — cultural practices achieve better long-term results, and repeated fungicide use can encourage resistant strains.
If you want to stay with a boxwood-type appearance, resistant cultivars including ‘Faulkner,’ ‘Trompenburg,’ and ‘Rococo’ show reduced susceptibility. They buy time rather than eliminate the problem — none are fully immune. Alternatives that provide the same formal hedge structure without the box blight vulnerability: yew (Taxus baccata), Ilex crenata (Japanese holly — visually almost identical to boxwood), and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus).
Overgrown Hedges — Renovation Without Killing It
An overgrown hedge is a structural problem, not a health problem — and most broadleaf hedging species are more tolerant of hard pruning than most gardeners expect. The issue is that the same approach that transforms a yew or hornbeam will permanently damage a Leyland cypress.

Species that regenerate well from old wood — confirmed by the RHS — include beech (Fagus sylvatica), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), holly (Ilex aquifolium), hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), yew (Taxus baccata), and box (Buxus sempervirens). These can be reduced by up to 50% in a single cut and will regrow.
Species that will not: Leyland cypress (×Cuprocyparis leylandii), Western red cedar (Thuja plicata), and most other Chamaecyparis species cannot regenerate from old wood. For these, the realistic options are careful side-shaping to maintain the current volume, or removal and replanting with a more manageable species.
The University of Maryland Extension notes that among conifers commonly used for hedging, only yews, junipers, hemlocks, false-cypress, and arborvitae tolerate severe pruning — and even among these, the degree of tolerance varies considerably.
The Three-Year Renovation Schedule
Cutting both sides and the top of an overgrown broadleaf hedge in a single year causes significant stress and vulnerability to disease. A staged approach is both kinder to the plant and more effective long-term.
Year 1: Reduce one side only to 6 inches below your target width. Leave the opposite side and the height completely untouched. Apply a 3–4 inch mulch layer over the root zone and water through dry spells during the growing season.
Year 2: Cut the second side to 6 inches below target width. Leave height unchanged. Mulch again.
Year 3: Reduce height to 6 inches below your target. Mulch and water through the first summer after this final cut.
The reason for targeting 6 inches below the final desired measurements: fresh growth will bring the hedge back to exactly the size you want. Cutting to your target dimension leaves no room for new growth and creates a flat, thin surface without the dense outer layer that makes formal hedges look full. RHS renovation guidance targets 15cm (roughly 6 inches) below the desired finished dimension for the same reason.
US Timing
For deciduous species (beech, hawthorn, hornbeam), start renovation in late winter while dormant — February through early March in most of Zones 5–7. For broadleaf evergreens (holly, yew), mid-spring after the last frost risk has passed (April–May in Zones 5–7) allows the plant to push fresh growth through wound surfaces immediately rather than sitting through cold weather before it can respond.
Avoid fall renovation entirely. Any growth stimulated by hard pruning in late summer or autumn will not harden before the first frosts, leaving tender shoots vulnerable to cold damage and fungal attack through winter.
Prevention — The Four Habits That Stop All Three Problems
Most hedge problems are avoidable. These four practices address the conditions that allow bare patches, box blight, and overgrowth-related decline to take hold.
Trim at the right times. Trim conifer hedges in April, June, and early August — never in high summer heat, dry spells, or autumn. The RHS finds that autumn trimming consistently correlates with increased dieback, both because fungal spores are most active in fall and because any growth flush stimulated won’t harden before cold weather. For broadleaf hedges, prune spring-flowering species immediately after they finish blooming; prune summer and fall bloomers in late winter before growth begins.
Cut a batter shape at every trim. A batter is a hedge that is wider at the base than at the top — a modest 5–10 degree slope on each side. Light reaches lower branches, preventing the bare lower sections that develop on many older hedges. A convex or angled top also drains faster after rain, reducing the surface humidity that favors box blight and dieback fungi.
Disinfect tools between plants. A 10% bleach solution or 70% ethanol wipe between plants takes under a minute and is the single most practical defense against box blight spread. The pathogen travels on shear blades, on gloves, and on clothing. If you have both healthy and potentially infected boxwood in the same garden, cut healthy plants first and disinfect before moving to any suspect areas.

A soaker hose or drip line at the hedge base delivers water to the roots without wetting the foliage.
