Aster yellows is caused by a phytoplasma — a type of parasitic bacteria that lives inside plant tissue and the insects that feed on it. Pythium and Phytophthora are water molds that cause root and crown rot in waterlogged or poorly drained soils. Plants infected with these pathogens decline quickly once wet conditions persist.

Pull back the mulch and examine the crown — the point where the stems meet the soil. Healthy crown tissue is firm and cream to tan in color. Rot manifests as:
- Dark brown or black discoloration at the crown or stem base
- Soft, mushy texture when pressed
- White cottony mycelium (Sclerotinia) or gray fuzz (Botrytis) visible at the base
- A foul, fermented smell
The above-ground wilting is the symptom you notice first, but the actual damage is always at the base. Do not be fooled by plants that appear stressed in the foliage — always check the crown.
Treatment and prevention
Infected plants should be removed and disposed of in the trash, not the compost. Sclerotinia sclerotia in the soil can infect the next round of plants, so avoid replanting echinacea in the same spot for at least two seasons.
For prevention, drainage is everything. Echinacea is a prairie plant — it evolved in well-drained, somewhat lean soils. Standing water around crowns, even briefly, is enough to invite Pythium.
