Are Begonias Annual or Perennial? The Short Answer by Zone

Every begonia sold at a garden center is botanically a perennial. None of them are true annuals — annuals are plants that are genetically programmed to flower, set seed, and die in a single season, and no begonia does that. What kills a begonia every fall isn’t its life cycle. It’s frost.

Whether yours comes back next spring depends on two things: your USDA hardiness zone, and which of the five common begonia types you’re actually growing. As a blanket rule, tuberous and wax (fibrous) begonias survive outdoors year-round only in zone 9 and warmer [1][3]. Rex and cane begonias need zone 10 or warmer, and mostly stay houseplants even there [4]. One outlier, hardy begonia (Begonia grandis), pushes the line all the way down to zone 6 [2] — more on that below, because it’s the one exception every "begonias are annuals" garden-center sign gets wrong.

Why "Tender Perennial" Isn’t a Contradiction

Gardening sites use "tender perennial" as if it’s a hedge, but it describes a real, specific trait: a plant built to live for years, with no built-in defense against freezing. Hardy perennials like peonies or daylilies survive winter because their roots accumulate solutes and tolerate ice forming in their tissue without dying. Begonias never evolved that trait — most wild Begonia species come from tropical and subtropical forest floors in Central/South America and Southeast Asia, where the ground never freezes, so there was never any evolutionary pressure to develop cold tolerance [1][2].

What actually happens inside a begonia during a hard frost isn’t the popular "ice punctures the cell walls" story repeated on most gardening blogs. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s frost physiology research, that kind of instant, wall-rupturing damage only occurs during extremely fast cooling — around 8°C per minute — which almost never happens in a garden [8]. What actually kills a begonia is slower and, in a way, worse: ice forms in the spaces between its cells first. Because water vapor pressure is lower over ice than over liquid water, the cell’s own water gets pulled outward toward that ice, and the cell collapses from dehydration rather than being punctured [8]. That’s why frosted begonia foliage doesn’t just wilt — it goes translucent, black, and mushy within a day. The tissue didn’t freeze solid; it was drained.

The tuber or rhizome underground is more insulated than the leaves, but it isn’t immune — prolonged exposure to freezing soil does the same thing to its cells. The practical read: if you bought a mixed flat of "begonias" at a big-box nursery, you likely have wax types in the bedding section and tuberous types sold by the bulb, both sharing roughly the same zone-9 line. Rex begonias sold as houseplants were never meant to go in the ground outside the warmest parts of Florida, Hawaii, or coastal Southern California. Cane types (the tall, spotted-leaf "angel wing" begonias) split the difference — grown outdoors all summer, then treated as a houseplant, never a garden perennial, once nights cool [6].

If you’re buying begonias for a border rather than a container and want the storage option, check the root before you commit at the nursery: tuberous begonias sold bare-root or in bulb bins show an obvious flattened, disc-shaped tuber; wax and cane begonias sold as potted bedding plants have ordinary fibrous roots and no storable organ at all. Below Zone 9? Store the Tubers and Your Begonia Comes Back Every Year

This is the step that actually makes a tender begonia behave like a perennial regardless of your zone. It only applies cleanly to tuberous types — wax and cane begonias don’t have a storable tuber, so those get potted up and brought indoors as a houseplant instead (see the table above).

  1. Time it to the first killing frost. Dig the clump within a few days of that first hard frost, not before — the plant is still pulling energy down into the tuber right up until the foliage blackens [5].
  2. Cut back and dry. Trim stems to about 1 inch above the tuber, shake off loose soil, and let the tubers cure in a cool, dry spot out of direct sun for roughly 2–3 weeks [5]. This hardens the skin so it doesn’t rot in storage.
  3. Pack them dry, not sealed. Layer the cured tubers in a cardboard box or paper bag with dry peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust, keeping them from touching each other [5][6].
  4. Hold at 40–50°F. A cool basement, unheated garage, or root cellar works — the range cited across university extensions runs 40–50°F (Iowa State) to 45–55°F (Clemson), but the one non-negotiable is never let them freeze [5][6].
  5. Check monthly. Rot spreads fast in storage. Any tuber that’s gone soft, dark, or sour gets removed before it takes the whole box with it.
  6. Replant in late winter to early spring, eye-side up, barely covered, once you’re within a few weeks of your last frost date [1].

I’ve lost an entire box of tubers to rot in a single winter by packing them into a sealed plastic tote instead of a breathable cardboard box — condensation collects with no airflow, and by February every tuber in the bottom layer was mush. A loosely closed cardboard box or paper bag, not plastic, is what the extension guidance is actually specifying when it says "dry storage." The same airflow rule applies whether you’re storing one tuber from a container plant or two dozen dug from a border — volume doesn’t change the chemistry, only how many boxes you need.

By late winter, a properly stored tuber breaks dormancy on its own — small pink buds swell on the top face before you’ve even brought it out of storage. That bud break is your cue to pot it up under bright indoor light a few weeks ahead of your last frost date, giving it a head start instead of planting a bare, unsprouted tuber directly outdoors.

UK Growers: The RHS 0°C Exception

UK gardeners work with a slightly different hardiness framework than USDA zones, but the underlying rule is identical: it’s frost, not the calendar, that decides. The Royal Horticultural Society classifies most begonias as simply "tender," with one clearly named exception — Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana, hardy to 0°C (32°F) [7]. That’s the UK equivalent of the hardy begonia line in the table above.

RHS guidance is more specific about timing than most US sources: lift tuberous begonias before the first frost, as soon as the leaves start yellowing naturally and you cut back watering. Store the dry tubers in barely moist soil or sand in a frost-free shed at around 7°C (45°F), watering just occasionally to keep them from shriveling completely — a subtly different approach from the bone-dry US storage method, worth following if you’re gardening in the UK’s milder, damper winter climate [7]. In sheltered spots — the base of a warm, south-facing wall, heavily mulched — even hardy begonia can sometimes be left in the ground through a mild UK winter [7].

The One Begonia That’s Actually Garden-Hardy

Every "begonias are annuals" blanket statement is talking about tuberous and wax types specifically. Hardy begonia (Begonia grandis) is the genuine exception, and it’s rarely mentioned in mainstream "are begonias perennial" roundups — most stop at the zone-9 line and never test it. In my own zone 6 garden bed, it’s the only begonia I’ve ever had come back on its own, without digging or storing anything.

NC State Extension rates it hardy in zones 6a through 9b, tolerating temperatures down to 23°F [2] — a full three zones colder than a standard tuberous begonia. It survives winter the same basic way any hardy perennial does: it dies back to the ground in fall and regrows from underground structures the following spring, no digging required. In zones 6 and 7, where that cold tolerance is closer to its edge, a heavy mulch layer over the crown meaningfully improves reliability [2].

What makes it genuinely unusual is how it spreads. As days shorten in autumn, the plant forms tiny pea-sized bulbils — miniature clone-plantlets — in each leaf axil along the stem. When the foliage dies back, those bulbils drop to the soil and overwinter there on their own, sprouting into new plants the following spring with zero intervention [2]. It’s a self-storing propagation system a tuberous begonia simply doesn’t have — the plant is, in effect, doing the digging-and-storing step described above for itself, just underground and without a cardboard box.

Do I have to dig up my begonias every year?

Only if you’re below your type’s zone line and want the same plant back next year. Tuberous and hardy begonias can be left in the ground in zones 9–11 and 6–9 respectively [1][2]; everywhere colder, digging (or bringing wax/cane types indoors as houseplants) is what turns a one-season plant into a multi-year one.

Can a begonia survive a light frost?

Sometimes — a brief, light frost may only damage the topmost leaves while the tuber underground stays insulated enough to survive. A hard, sustained frost is what causes the full blackened, mushy dieback described above [8]. Don’t use survival of a light frost as proof the plant is hardy in your zone; dig on schedule regardless.

Are begonias toxic to pets?

Yes — the ASPCA lists begonias as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, with the underground tubers and rhizomes carrying the highest concentration of the toxic calcium oxalates [9]. This matters most during digging and storage season, when tubers sit in an accessible box or shed.

Will an indoor begonia eventually die if I never repot or divide it?

No — kept as a houseplant year-round (the standard approach for rex and cane types), a begonia has no winter dormancy trigger and simply keeps growing, needing only routine repotting as it outgrows its container [4][6].

My wax begonias don’t have a tuber — can I still store them?

Not the same way. Wax and cane begonias grow from fine fibrous roots, not a fleshy tuber, so there’s nothing solid to dig, cure, and box up. Instead, cut the plant back by roughly half, pot it in fresh soil if it was in the ground, and move it indoors to a cool, bright spot with reduced watering until spring — functionally the same "keep it alive through winter" goal, just achieved as a dormant-ish houseplant instead of a stored tuber [3][6].
