Illinois Extension researchers are frank about this: “Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a lot of research done, especially on a garden scale, on companion planting.” [2] That said, the mechanisms that do work are worth understanding, because once you know why a pairing works, you can make smarter decisions for your own garden.

Three core mechanisms drive effective companion planting around winter squash:

Nitrogen cycling: Legumes — beans and peas — host Rhizobium bacteria in their root nodules. These bacteria pull nitrogen gas from the atmosphere and convert it into ammonium, a form plants can absorb. As bean root material decomposes, that nitrogen becomes available to neighboring squash roots. [2]

Aromatic deterrence: Certain plants produce volatile organic compounds — peppery glucosinolates (nasturtium), sulfur compounds (alliums), and strong terpenes (marigolds) — that confuse or repel pest insects. The Three Sisters — corn, beans, and squash — has archaeological evidence dating to 1070 AD in North America, practiced by the Haudenosaunee and at least 15 other Indigenous groups before European contact. [3] Each plant plays a defined role:

  • Corn provides structural support for climbing beans and shade for squash and bean roots during the hottest part of summer
  • Beans fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic Rhizobium bacteria, naturally fertilizing the surrounding corn and squash
  • Winter squash spreads wide as living mulch, suppressing weeds, retaining soil moisture, and shading out competing plants [3]

A meta-analysis of intercropping systems found these polycultures “can result in major increases in the efficiency of land and nitrogen fertilizer use.” [3]

Setup: Space corn in hills 4 feet apart. Once corn reaches 6 inches, plant pole beans at the base of each corn hill. Stagger squash hills between the corn rows — one squash plant per 4–8 corn hills. Winter squash varieties like butternut, acorn, or Hubbard work well; pumpkins are too vigorous and will smother the beans.

One honest caveat: Washington State University researchers note that compelling published evidence specifically measuring yield improvement for the Three Sisters is limited. [2] What’s well-established is the nitrogen fixation mechanism and the weed suppression role of squash leaves — those elements are solid.

7 Best Companion Plants for Winter Squash

1. Beans and Peas

Beans are the most evidence-backed companion for any cucurbit. Rhizobium bacteria colonize bean root nodules and convert atmospheric N₂ into plant-available ammonium. [2] As root material decomposes after the season, that nitrogen enters the soil profile directly around your squash roots.

Pole beans are preferable to bush beans — they grow vertically, leaving horizontal space for squash vines. Peas work the same way via nitrogen fixation, with an added timing advantage: they mature early, so by the time your squash vines spread in July, the peas are finished and don’t compete for space.

2. Nasturtium

Nasturtium is one of the few companions with genuine research support for squash pest control. An Iowa trial found that nasturtiums reduced damage from squash bugs and cucumber beetles when planted near cucurbits. [1]

The mechanism: nasturtium leaves contain glucosinolates that break down into isothiocyanates when damaged. These pungent volatiles disrupt the host-finding behavior of pest insects by masking the chemical signature of squash foliage. Nasturtiums also act as a trap crop — aphids prefer them strongly and cluster there rather than on squash.

Plant nasturtiums 18–24 inches from squash plants. Close enough for aromatic deterrence, far enough that aphid infestations on nasturtiums don’t bridge directly to the squash. Nasturtium leaves and flowers are edible, so you get pest control and a salad topping from the same plant.

3. French Marigolds

Marigolds bring two distinct benefits, and it’s worth distinguishing between them because most guides conflate them.

For pest deterrence, French marigolds (Tagetes patula) emit a strong scent that masks host plant odors and can reduce pest egg-laying near squash. The same Florida study that found benefits from marigolds showed increased populations of aphid predators near treated squash plots. [1]

For nematode suppression, Tagetes roots exude alpha-terthienyl, a compound with documented nematicidal activity — and squash is highly susceptible to plant-parasitic nematodes. [4] Here’s the nuance most guides miss: intercropping marigolds alongside squash at planting time does not suppress nematodes. According to UF/IFAS Extension, marigolds must be grown as a dense cover crop in the same bed for at least 8 weeks before squash is planted, spaced no more than 7 inches apart. [4]

In practice: plant French marigolds 12–18 inches from squash at transplant time for pest deterrence. If nematodes are a persistent problem in your soil, run a marigold cover crop in the bed 8 weeks before squash season and till it in before transplanting.

4. Borage

Borage is one of the most reliable pollinator plants in the vegetable garden. Its bright blue flowers attract bumblebees — the primary pollinators for squash — which are essential for full fruit set. Female squash flowers need multiple bee visits to develop properly; poor pollination shows up as aborted fruits that shrivel before maturing. Adding borage near squash is one of the first interventions worth trying if you’re seeing this problem.

Beyond pollination, borage accumulates calcium in its leaves. As the plant dies back and decomposes, it adds calcium to the surrounding soil, which helps squash avoid calcium-deficiency issues. Borage self-seeds readily, so plant it once and it tends to return each year without replanting.

5. Radish

Radishes work as a fast-maturing trap crop for squash vine borers and cucumber beetles. The peppery volatile compounds in radish roots and foliage deter adult vine borers from laying eggs on nearby squash stems. [1]

There’s also a timing advantage: radishes mature in 25–30 days, well before winter squash vines begin spreading. Sow radishes at transplant time, harvest by early July, and you’ve gotten a bonus crop while protecting squash during its most vulnerable early weeks. Plant on the perimeter of the squash bed — every 12–18 inches — so you can reach them for harvest before vines spread over them.

6. Dill

Dill’s flat-topped umbel flowers attract three of the most effective predatory insects for squash pest management: parasitic wasps (which parasitize squash bug eggs and caterpillars), lacewings (whose larvae consume aphids), and ladybugs. [1] The flower structure provides landing platforms and nectar for small beneficial insects that would otherwise have nowhere to feed in a low-growing squash planting.

The key: let dill flower fully. Snipping it for kitchen use before it bolts removes the flowers that attract beneficials. Plant dill 18–24 inches from squash. If you’re already growing dill as a culinary herb nearby, its proximity to squash delivers free pest control with no extra effort.

7. Sweet Alyssum

Sweet alyssum’s honey-scented white flowers are a consistent attractor of hoverflies and parasitic wasps — the same Florida study that tested marigolds included sweet alyssum and found a positive effect on natural enemy populations near squash. [1] Alyssum stays low (6–10 inches), which makes it practical as a border plant around the edge of a squash bed without competing for vertical space.

Sow alyssum directly at squash transplant time. It germinates in 7–10 days and begins flowering within 6–8 weeks, timed well to when squash plants start attracting pest pressure.

3 Plants to Avoid Near Winter Squash

Fennel

Fennel produces allelopathic compounds — chemicals released into the surrounding soil that can inhibit the germination and growth of neighboring plants. [5] The evidence for fennel’s allelopathy is largely observational rather than from controlled trials, so the effect on squash specifically is uncertain. But the consistent recommendation across extension services and experienced gardeners is to give fennel its own dedicated bed, at least 4–6 feet from any cucurbit.

There’s also a practical problem: fennel grows tall and wide, competing for the same sprawling ground space that squash vines need.

Potatoes

Potatoes and winter squash are both heavy feeders with high nitrogen and phosphorus demands — planting them together sets up direct competition for nutrients and water in the same soil zone. More importantly, potatoes are highly susceptible to late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and other soil-borne pathogens that persist in garden beds. Keeping them separated also supports clean crop rotation: squash and potatoes belong in different rotation groups.

Other Cucurbits

Cucumbers, summer squash, and pumpkins attract the same pest complex as winter squash: cucumber beetles, squash vine borers, squash bugs, and powdery mildew. Concentrating cucurbits in the same area creates a large target that overwintering pest populations will find faster in spring and establish in more densely.

Putting It All Together

You don’t need all seven companions at once. A practical starting point for a new squash bed: plant French marigolds as a cover crop 8 weeks before transplant time. When squash goes in, pull out half the marigolds and add nasturtiums and radishes around the perimeter. Let the remaining marigolds continue blooming alongside. Add a borage plant at one edge of the bed — it will self-seed and return annually.

If you’re working with an established bed and don’t have the 8-week lead time for marigolds, my first choice is nasturtium — plant it 18 inches from the squash stems and let it ramble. It has the strongest research backing of any squash companion, takes minutes to set up, and gives you pest deterrence, an aphid trap, and edible flowers in one plant.

The three things to remember: nasturtiums need space (not right against the squash stems), marigolds only suppress nematodes when planted as a pre-crop, and other cucurbits are your biggest competition risk. Get those three right and companion planting will make a measurable difference in your squash bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you plant summer squash and winter squash together?
They’ll cross-pollinate if you’re saving seeds, but growing them together for eating is fine. The bigger concern is that both attract the same pests — concentrating them in one area doubles the pest pressure. Separate them if squash vine borers or cucumber beetles are a recurring problem.

How many nasturtium plants per squash plant?
Two to three nasturtiums per squash is a reasonable starting ratio. They’re fast-growing and edible, so planting densely around the bed perimeter costs nothing extra and adds more aromatic deterrence.

Will companion plants eliminate squash bugs?
No companion combination will eliminate squash bugs. Nasturtiums, radishes, and marigolds reduce pest pressure — fewer egg clutches, more predatory insects. You’ll still need to check leaf undersides weekly during peak season and remove egg masses manually. Companion planting is one layer in integrated pest management, not a replacement for it.

When should I plant companions relative to squash?
