The 4-foot maximum width isn’t arbitrary. Your arm span from the edge reaches roughly 2 feet — so a 4-foot-wide bed lets you reach every plant from either long side without stepping into the soil and compacting it. The 2×4 design is the right starter bed: boards carry easily by one person, no complex cuts, and it’s genuinely useful for herbs and salad greens at just 6 inches deep. The L-shape solves a specific problem — fitting a corner space or creating a visual garden anchor near a fence or patio. It’s two 4×4 beds joined at a corner, giving you 32 square feet with a natural path between each arm.

Choosing Wood That Won’t Rot in Two Seasons

This is where most first-time builders make an expensive mistake: buying the cheapest lumber and replacing it within a few years. Here’s what the research actually shows:

  • Cedar (best all-round): Western red cedar lasts 10–15 years in soil contact. Its natural oils resist fungal decay — but only in the heartwood, the dark reddish center of the board. The pale outer ring (sapwood) has almost no rot resistance. When buying, choose boards with predominantly reddish coloring rather than pale cream edges.
  • Southern yellow pine: The most available option at most lumber yards, but it has almost no resistance to rot or insects in direct soil contact and may need replacing within a few years. Only worth using if you seal every cut end and accept a short lifespan.
  • Pressure-treated lumber (modern ACQ): The chromated copper arsenate (CCA) formulations banned in 2004 were genuinely concerning. Modern alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) formulations are significantly safer — University of Maine Extension confirms some leaching occurs but at low concentrations unlikely to meaningfully enter edible plant tissue. Most gardeners growing food still prefer to avoid it.
  • Cinder blocks: The cheapest option according to Virginia Tech Extension at roughly $155 for a comparable 4×8 bed — they last over 100 years and need no maintenance. Not as attractive, but worth knowing if budget is the constraint.

Plan 1 — The 4×8 Standard Bed

A 4×8 bed fits eight tomato plants, four pepper plants, or a full season of lettuces. At 12 inches tall, it’s deep enough for most standard vegetables and the easiest to source lumber for — 8-foot boards require no cuts for the long sides.

Lumber list (12 inches tall):

  • 6 × 2×6×8’ cedar boards (actual: 1.5” × 5.5” each)
  • 4 × 4×4 posts cut to 12” (corner reinforcement, inside corners)
  • 40–50 × 3” exterior deck screws

Cut list:

  • Long sides: 4 full-length 8’ boards (2 per side, stacked)
  • Short ends: Cut 2 boards in half to yield four 4’ pieces (2 per end)

Two stacked 2×6 boards give you 11 inches of wall height. To reach a true 12 inches, add a 1×1 cedar filler strip along the top edge, or use a 2×8 board for the bottom layer of each side (actual height 7.25” + 5.5” = 12.75” — close enough for most gardens).

Estimated cost: $80–$100 in cedar lumber (2026 pricing) plus $15–$25 for screws and hardware. Virginia Tech Extension puts the full material cost for a 4×8×12” untreated wood bed at around $188 when including fill materials.

Plan 2 — The 2×4 Compact Bed

A 2-foot-wide by 4-foot-long bed at 6 inches deep is sized for herbs, lettuce, spinach, and radishes — crops with shallow roots that don’t need 12 inches of soil. It’s light enough to reposition after assembly and small enough that even children can reach every plant from one side.

Lumber list (6 inches tall):

  • 2 × 2×6×8’ cedar boards (yield two 4’ long sides from one board; two 2’ short ends from the other, with a 4’ offcut to save)
  • 4 × 4×4 posts cut to 6” (corner posts), or substitute metal raised-bed corner brackets for a tool-free option
  • 16 × 3” exterior deck screws

The 2×4 is also the ideal children’s first garden project. The 2-foot width means young arms reach the center from one side with ease, and the shallow frame is light enough for kids to carry and position themselves.

Plan 3 — The L-Shape Corner Bed

The L-shape is two 4×4 beds joined at one corner, positioned at 90 degrees. Total growing space: 32 square feet in a configuration that fills a yard corner and creates a natural path between each arm. The inner dead-zone where the two arms meet is the ideal spot for a trellis or a climbing bean pole — it’s hard to reach from either arm, so plant something tall that doesn’t need frequent access.

Lumber list (two 4×4 beds, 12 inches tall):

  • 4 × 2×6×8’ cedar boards (cut each in half — yields eight 4’ pieces, two per wall face)
  • 8 × 4×4 posts cut to 12” (four per bed)
  • 80 × 3” exterior deck screws

Build each 4×4 section separately, then set them at 90 degrees with adjacent corner posts touching. Drive two long screws (3.5”–4”) through the outer corner post of one bed into the outer corner post of the adjacent bed to lock the angle. Check square with a framing square before the final screws set.

Step-by-Step Assembly (All Three Plans)

The corner post method is the same for all three plans. A basic drill and saw are the only power tools required.

  1. Cut lumber to length. For the 4×8, make two 4-foot cuts to create the short ends. Long sides use full 8-foot boards. For the 2×4 and L-shape, cut to the lengths listed above.
  2. Cut corner posts. Mark your 4×4 post at 12 inches (6 inches for the compact bed). A miter saw is fastest; a circular saw works fine. Make four cuts per bed.
  3. Pre-drill pilot holes. Drill two pilot holes near each end of every board to prevent splitting. Cedar is forgiving, but pilot holes give cleaner joints and prevent the wood from checking along the grain.
  4. Assemble one corner. Hold a short-end board flush against the face of a corner post, top and bottom aligned. Drive two screws through the board into the post. Repeat on the adjacent face with the long board to form an L-shape.
  5. Build remaining corners, then connect. Assemble all four corners the same way, then attach them to complete the frame.
  6. Check square. Measure diagonally from corner to corner in both directions. Equal diagonals mean the frame is square. Adjust before filling.
  7. Set and level. Place the frame on the prepared site. Add or remove soil under the base to level it — a level bed prevents water from pooling at one end and prevents one side from rotting faster.
  8. Add a weed barrier. Landscape fabric or two layers of cardboard suppress weeds from below. Hardware cloth (1/4” mesh) adds protection against gophers and voles and is worth the investment if burrowing pests are present in your area. How Deep Should Your Raised Bed Be?

The depth rule that most guides miss: build height based on what you’re growing before you decide on a plan, not after. University of Maryland Extension gives these minimum depths for beds placed over hard surfaces:

If your bed sits on soil rather than concrete, roots can penetrate below the bed floor — depth matters significantly less. Utah State University Extension recommends leaving the bottom open on beds shallower than 12 inches placed on soil, both for drainage and so roots can access the native soil below. On hard surfaces, hit at least 18 inches for tomatoes or you’ll see stunted plants and low yields.

This table is also why the 2×4 compact plan at 6 inches is specifically scoped to herbs and leafy greens. A 6-inch bed placed on concrete is not suitable for tomatoes — you’d need a full 18–24-inch depth for that.

What to Fill Your Raised Bed With

Skip bagged garden soil — it compacts badly in raised beds and delivers poor results. University of Connecticut Extension (2026) recommends one-half to two-thirds topsoil and one-third to one-half aged compost. The result is a loose, crumbly medium that holds water without waterlogging roots and feeds plants through the growing season.

For a 4×8 bed at 12 inches deep, you need roughly 32 cubic feet (about 1.2 cubic yards) of fill. Buying topsoil and compost by the cubic yard rather than in bags cuts cost significantly — often by half or more. Avoid free fill from unknown sources: University of Maryland Extension notes contamination and invasive worm risks that can persist for years.

A cost-saving option: the hügelkultur approach fills the lower third of the bed with logs, branches, leaves, and kitchen scraps, then tops with the topsoil-compost mix. The buried organic material decomposes over 2–3 years, enriching the soil above while reducing the total fill volume you need to buy. It works best in tall 12-inch or deeper beds.
